Yash Chopra should be remembered for his ability to make a film with a stale story and yet infuse it with new-found energy. The story itself may actually be one of the film's weakest links, but the script and the execution, along with the technical brilliance and the soul which the director injects it with, elevate the picture to an altogether different level. It tries to present itself as a simple love story, which does not work with a larger-than-life story but rather an episode in which true romance comes in the middle of happy-go-lucky, hardly-romantic people. The film is never overly melodramatic or gushing in its emotional quotient. But the whole theory of the film, which tries to convey a message that somewhere someone is made for you, is quite interesting and inspiring despite its cheesiness. Chopra portrays the troupe of Shahrukh as a totally modern one, while the character of Madhuri and her soft romantic nature is actually deprecated even by some of the characters in the film itself. While some of the dialogue is a bit cheesy, most of it is actually very real and has some sense of everyday reality.
Chopra strikes an amazing balance between contemporary culture and poetic romanticism. Dil To Pagal Hai indulges in its romanticism but what I found great about it is its totally realistic portrayal of young artists. The numbers are evidently very well invested (the foremost example being the very first song, "Le Gayee", which is a part of the show and a great opening), spectacularly danced and are really fun to watch, but there's something else in there, a kind of charm that is hard to explain in words. No one can do it better, and that's not about the choreography or the technical brilliance, it's more about the soul. This film actually bears the stamp of Hindi cinema's immense talent in making musicals. Where the music goes, Uttam's soundtrack is totally excellent, but more than anything the way in which the songs are presented is exemplary. This is one film in which the songs are mostly a part of the storyline and the movie can be rightly described as a romantic musical, and not just because it's Bollywood. I appreciate the fact that Chopra kept updating his style with every new film. The silence in the theatre was suddenly broken by a singular voice! My dad was standing with his hands thrown in the air, shouting “Hum toh pagal ho gaye”! Over 200 eyes were now focused on my dad, while my sister quickly chose to slide from her seat in a desperate bid to escape from this ‘embarrassing’ situation.Īs I pleaded with my dad to sit down, the roar of laughter around us was deafening! “See, most of them were craving for some comic relief,” remarked my dad.Dil To Pagal Hai is a wonderfully made movie - entertaining, impressive and romantic. He kept asking, why is there no interval in the movie? His boredom notwithstanding, I diverted my attention to an intense scene. One hour into the movie, I could sense my dad’s restlessness.
As the credits began to roll, there were whistles and claps from the people in the front seats. With a rather stoic mind, they entered the movie hall. In an effort to lighten their mood, I said, “You will simply love this movie, the review says this story has touched the hearts of people across all age groups.” My elation was certainly not contagious as it failed to elicit any smile on their face while my sister was gleaming with happiness.īeing fans of Dharmendra, Vishnu Vardhan and Guru Dutt, my parents merely stared at the poster of Dil to pagal hai. I ran excitedly towards my parents brandishing the tickets in my hand. The definition of best seats in those days was certainly not a recliner, but two out of the four seats were towards the exit door. The guy at the counter had told us the balcony had the best cushions. Squeezing through the crowd, I brought four balcony tickets. Keeping them guessing, we quickly finished lunch and headed to the theatre almost an hour before the movie started. My sister quickly said, “No Amma, this is a Hindi movie with the three biggest stars of Bollywood”. “I hope it’s a nice movie, is it a Vishnu Vardhan-starrer?” my mother asked eagerly. Our parents’ wedding anniversary was one such occasion that was celebrated at the erstwhile Puttana Kannagal theatre in South Bengaluru.
